Now that Prom 2009 is drawing to a close, preparations for Prom 2010 are well under way! New dresses are being designed and they look great! The "Prom 2010" blog should be up in running hopefully by August. We enter into another Prom season. Prom 2010 is going to be great!

Racially Segregated Prom?

Public separation by race is a thing of the past right? No more segregated bathrooms, schools, theaters, restaurants, etc. You would think that prom would be included in this category, right? Well at Montgomery County High School in Georgia is still stuck in the past.

On May 1, 2009 the white senior students held their prom and the next day, the black students held theirs. How is this possible? How can a school with both black and white students be allowed to hold racially divided proms?

Most 2009 proms have been conducted already. The night come and gone. Did sharing prom with a person of a different race lessen the experience? Should Montgomery County High School be allowed to racially divide its prom?

Looking ahead to Prom 2010, should this high school put aside its racial differences and hold one prom?

Schools across the country are approaching their final days of the year. For many, summer has aleady arrived. For many, Prom came and went. I'd like to know how well it went. When you look back at your prom night, what do you think about?

Was this prom your last? Your first? Did it meet your expectations? Did it fall short? What would make next year's prom better?

What would tell next year's juniors to expect at prom?

Another question I have to ask is what do you think about hand-me-down prom dresses? They save you a lot of money and can look great. Is it acceptable to wear one to prom? Would you let your little sister wear your prom dress to hers? Would you let a friend borrow it?

I think it's sensible. The hand-me-down status of the dress won't lessen the experience of prom, in my opinion. Do you agree?

Junior/Senior...Sophomore Prom?

Unlike Homecoming, Prom is a special event for the upper classmen, but recently I have observed that many Sophomores attend this extravagant event as well. Many of the sophomores have dates that are upper classmen while others work the system and gain admittance in a roundabout way.
To me, Prom is supposed to be special. Something to look forward to while you are an under classman. In my opinion, if you go to prom while you are an under classman it lessens the significance of fun. Maybe that's just the traditional side in my speaking, but I'd like to know what you think about it.

Ridin' in Style...For Less!

By the time you've bought a dress, shoes, makeup, accessories, tickets, and all that jazz, you've already shelled out quite a bit of money toward prom. With the economy today, money is a little tighter and not everyone will be able to afford a limo for transportation. So what are cheaper alternatives that will still allow you to arrive in style? Here are just a few ideas....

1. A yellow taxi- Especially for those who live in more of a suburban area where taxis are not as common, arriving in a taxi will make you stand out. How many suburbanites -who most likely have never ridden in a taxi before- will arrive to prom in one? Not many, because the idea won't occur to most. So by arriving in a yellow taxi, all eyes will be on you as you arrive. However, the taxi must be yellow -it's classic and yellow really stands out.

2. An old fashioned car- Retro is in, right? Many things that existed decades ago are making a come back in today's world, so wouldn't arriving in an old fashioned car make you stand out? Of course it will. If you ask your friends and family, someone is bound to know someone with an older car -that's in good condition- that you and your friends will be able to borrow. It's worth looking into. The older the car model is, the better.

3. YOUR car- This idea may sound lame to you because you and your friends see your car every single day. How can taking your own car to prom possibly be cool? One word: DECORATIONS! If you decorate your car (window paint, streamers, etc.) it'll give it new life and a fresh look. You can be as creative as you want with the decorations, but just make sure they don't interfere with your safe arrival.

Those are just a few suggestions. There are a multitude of ways to arrive to prom without having to empty your wallet to pay for a limo, just be creative.

Prom dates. A must?

Roughly 20 plus years ago almost everyone went to prom with a date. When talking with my mom, grandmother, aunt, etc about prom all of them said that back then, if you didn't have a date you didn't go to prom. Now that may not have applied to everyone at the time, but according to them it applied to the majority.

Today however, it seems that that is no longer the case. Many people go to prom as a group, whether it be a group of girls, a group of guys. or a mix, going to prom with a date no longer seems like a necessity. Which in my opinion is a good thing. Not everyone dates in high school and they shouldn't have to miss out on prom because of it.

So what do you think? Is having a date to prom important? Or is it perfectly fine to go with a group of friends?

Shoes...

After buying a dress and maybe some accessories the next item on the list is typically shoes. Selecting the right pair of shoes is critical to the success of prom. If the shoes are bad, it could ruin the entire night.

The most important thing to think about when considering which shoes to buy is, of course, comfort. It doesn't matter how cute the shoes are, if they aren't comfortable they aren't the right shoes to wear to prom.

Low heel shoes can look very nice and would be easy to dance in. Although I would steer clear of any shoe without a supporting strap around the back of the foot.

Any shoe that pinches your feet is definitely not a good idea. You will be wearing these shoes for hours. Your feet don't want to be scrunched up for that long and the chances of getting a blister are pretty high.

Shoes with plenty of cushion might also be a good idea. It never hurt anyone to have a little extra padding.

Shoes, like dresses, come in all different styles and colors. Finding a comfortable pair of cute shoes shouldn't be too difficult.

Themes

One important aspect of prom -which can be important when picking out a dress- is theme. Many proms have different themes to them. So what are some of the more popular prom themes?

Parisian Romance is a classic. Paris makes a wonderful theme for a couple of reasons: Paris is one of the most popular cities in France, a country filled with romantic culture, Paris is the City of Love, and who wouldn't want a model of the Eiffel Tower at their prom?

An Underwater themed prom is often popular. Decorated with colorful fish, mermaids, bubbles, and various shades of blue it's easy to see why this theme is such a hit.

Starry Night is another Prom pleaser that is simple to set up. Glow in the dark stars, metallic shimmering stars, and twinkling lights are essentially the only decorations needed. They work in harmony to create the feeling of spending the night in a sea of stars.

These three themes are by no means the only Prom themes out there. Do you know of a unique prom theme that could rival these three for popularity?

Tanning Control

In preparation for prom, many girls spend a lot of time in a tanning bed. A recent proposal in Texas may put a damper on this tradition. Because of the potential health hazard (the possibiliity that tanning beds increase the risk of skin cancer), the bill would require anyone under the age of 18 to have a doctor's note and a parent present while in the tanning salon.
What do you think of the proposal? Good or bad? Would this suck the fun out of tanning? If this bill were to be passed (and if it is passed in Texas it is likely to spread to other states) would it stop you from going to the tanning salon?

Prom Invitation Goes to "Hell"

OMG! Check out the huge uproar in St. Louis, Missouri over a Prom invitation "Calling all Sinners" to Hell. It's for real!!! A private school called John Burroughs sent out the invites to "Let the Sin Begin".

It doesn't stop there..."The sin continues" at an After Prom party "hosted by the devilish Junior Class Parents".

Tons of parents hate the invite - and images with it including a girl in a sexy red dress. Others, say it's no big deal. What do you think? Would your school ever send something like this out?

Since it's soooo busy on President's Day, you may want to call ahead to smaller stores and get an appointment. Hey, seems like everywhere you shop you see tons of animal print dresses for Prom 2009. Lots of girls fall in love with wild jungle prints because they are soooo different and very fun! But not everyone hears the call of the wild. My friend Shelly from Maryland thinks animal prints like zebra, cheetah and leopard are way too casual for a night as big as Prom. "Prom is so elegant, and I think wearing a print dress makes it look like you're going clubbing," she told me today. She's shopping for a deep sea blue dress for her May 8th Prom. Would you ever wear a knock off of Michelle Obama’s Inaugural Ball gown to Prom? Several Prom dress designers – like edressme - are betting you want to copy the First Lady’s look. They're rushing to make it in time for Prom 2009.

OK… no question the one-shoulder chiffon gown Jason Wu created for the First Lady is drop dead gorgeous.
But I just don’t see it for Prom – even though Jason is only 26 years old! I think it looks more like a wedding dress.
Yikes, can you imagine how dirty it would get after being dragged around all night! Plus several of us thought that Michelle O look heavy in the dress. And she's so tall and very thin so what would it look like on someone shorter.

Prom came almost six months early to Decatur, Illinois! It all happened in November when teens from two high schools put their rivals aside to film the final scene of a new television series called "The N's Student Body". The new teen reality series follows a dozen high school teens on a life-changing mission to gain personal health and wellness.

Hollywood producers called Sydney's Closet,the glamour pro for Prom, to provide trendy Prom dresses for the big reveal in the final scene!
